Jim Toia: Mushrooms As Art

Mushrooms are wonderful tasting, fantastically interesting organisms (nobody really knows how and why they grow), nice to look at, and, if you gather your own, exciting in a “gee, I wonder whether I will die a horrible death if I eat this?” sort of way.

However, I just discovered another marvelous use for them. Actually, I discovered that someone with more talent than I has found a fascinating way to make beautiful prints from the spores when they leave the bodies of the mushrooms. I am not doing the process or the end result justice, so head over to his web site and see for yourself.

I saw another piece in this series at our high school reunion, and was fascinated by the confluence of food and art. Jim had generously donated it for an auction to raise money for the school in the name of our class, and even displayed on a makeshift easel under some tent lights it looked amazing. There is detail in these pieces that can’t be seen in the low quality reproduction of my computer screen, but I think they still are wonderful.

  1. Interesting! I just read the first bit of your post then looked at the photo and was wondering what does that have to do with mushrooms? It’s pretty creative, interesting stuff. 🙂 Thanks for sharing. I love mushrooms btw. hehe. 🙂
